Your night of mystery awaits!

Prom is one of Primavera’s largest school events. About 250 students attend on average, and the number grows each year! This year, our students voted on four prom themes. The winner–by a landslide–was Masquerade Ball.

You can learn more about prom, happening May 13 from 7–11 p.m. at the Windemere Hotel in Mesa, in this blog post.

Masquerades date back to the 16th century. These were formal events where people hid their identities through elaborately decorated masks. Although it is not required, you are more than welcome to dress up in the masquerade theme. Here are some fun ideas to accessorize for Primavera’s Masquerade Ball.

Masquerade Ball: Ideas for Styling and Accessorizing

If you’re going to attend a Masquerade Ball, there’s one obvious thing you need: a mask.

Ideas for making your mask

You can purchase beautiful masks at jewelry and craft stores. But if you’re more of a DIY kind of person, we’ve got some fun ideas below to get your creative juices flowing.

Here are a couple masks Primavera students have already made for the upcoming event:
Girl wearing golden mask with pointed nose
Black mask with silver glitter lining and a black feather on the left side.

In the olden days, people made their masks out of paper mache. You could do that, following these steps. Or you can buy a plain, white mask available at stores like Wal-Mart, Michael’s or even the Dollar Store.

Once you have a white mask, you will want scissors, a hot glue gun and one (or more!) of the following accessories:

  • Paint, fabric or something to add color to your mask
  • Large feathers
  • Glitter
  • Jewels
  • Ribbon
  • Decorating is up to you! You can choose whatever color scheme or decorations you like! Here are some styling ideas:

Go Classic

You can’t go wrong with the classic masquerade look. Add some color and feathers, and you’re all set!

Incorporate Something You Love

Make a statement! If you love to sing, try including sheet music like in the mask above. Or if you love photography, include some of your photos.

Maybe you live for comics or anime. Try decoupaging your favorite characters onto a mask!

Keep it Simple

Instead of making the mask the centerpiece of your outfit, you can always go for a simple accent. Solid color lace masks are a beautiful addition to any outfit.

Glue a Stick to Hold Up a Full Face Mask

A full mask with a stick attached allows for a dramatic ballroom entry. In the olden days, people would enter the masquerade ball holding up the mask so as to completely hide their identities. They would later reveal their identity and dance the night away.Primavera Prom Mask RulesFor your protection, we do have a few rules you must follow for your masks. They are as follows:

  • Masks that cover the face must be held in hands; the mask cannot be tied or sit over your head.
  • Masks cannot contain profane language or suggestive, negative or inappropriate designs.
  • Upon check in, students will be inspected to ensure masks meet the guidelines. Masks that are deemed inappropriate will be stored in a bin at the check-in table until prom ends.

Masquerade Ball: Ideas for Accessorizing & Styling

Makeup Ideas

When you’re planning for the masquerade, think vintage and formal. If you don’t want to wear a mask the entire night, try adding some “masquerade” styled makeup, as pictured below.

A “vintage” style makeup is a great route to follow too! Think wing eye and bright lipstick, like what you see below.

Styling for Ladies

Primavera’s prom is formal, so come in your best dress! There is a dress code to follow, which you can find in this Prom blog post. So long as you follow the dress code, what you decide to wear for dresses is completely up to you!

Styling for Men

Masquerades are generally a very dapper look. If you want to embrace the masquerade look, you might want to go for the good ol’ fashioned tux.

You could also go for the “old fashioned gentlemen” look with some suspenders and a bowtie, as shown below.

Tickets cost $30. All attendees–students and guests–must purchase a ticket. Be sure to purchase your prom tickets by May 12.
